Aloha from the big Island...
My first post here so I hope I don't mess it up!I'm trying to get this Stovebolt that is available here on a barter for construction work.(right up my alley). It's a little rusty in spots but the engine and drivetrain had a lot of work done on it about 8 years ago.It starts and runs good.I have been up late for three nights now reading posts and advice from this site.I'm like a kid in a penny candy store.I haven't been this excited since my last grand daughter was born!!I'm looking forward to asking advice and talking "STORY" IN THE FUTURE.
BTW,my first vehicle was a blue '55 chevy small window pickup with straight six,4speed,and baby moon hubcaps.Oh the memories...

Thanks mexicosab!!The truck had metal plates welded over the old wood flat bed.The metal goes and the wood bed will be redone.I want to return it as close as I can to the original truck. It really hasn't been modified much except someone fiber glassed over the vent right under the windshield and the heater is long gone. The dash is the biggest problem. It's pretty rusted out and I'm gonna have to do some modification...(gonna need some suggestions for sure!!)I'm going up to see it again in the morning and I'll take some pictures and try to get em posted.

I'm way ahead of you, Jeff. I finished our bath remodel a month ago. The only thing I'm waiting for now is heat! To cold for me to work on my truck. It was -15 below zero with a wind chill of -30 below. Do you want to trade places????????? grin

Hey! Great idea with the grandkids.I think i'll use that as my ace in the hole if all else fails. You know... recoup my "investment" with money saved delivering my own construction supplies, riding in parades, taking the dogs to the vet...
Aw,the wife will see right thru that! Better play the grandkid card first huh?

Jeff, sounds like you've got some good Scottish weather there! brrrrr We've got a warning for 50/70mph winds this weekend.
I guess it's a little warmer where you are though! grin

Hawaiiansteel: I heard she was going to put up posters, with you picture on it, in the fast food places that says "Do NOT Feed This Man".....LOL

I do have my grandkids down here in the shop often, just like I did my kids, and they go home with paint, sawdust and grease all over them and their clothes. They love and there parents have learned to put on some old clothes when they come to Pa-Pa's. Even the 3 year old gets nasty.....they love it. I let them help when/where they can and hopefully some day it will keep THEM out of the honky tonks and crack houses! I'm sure counting on it.

Hey all,Just an update...
We haven't been able to come to an agreement on the terms for the truck. She wants more money and work trade than I believe the truck is worth.I think she paid too much for it and believes it's value is higher than is practical for the truck and it's overall condition.
Oh well,Just got to keep looking or take a road trip to the mainland and bring one back.there will be a Stovebolt in my future.
I'll keep you posted on what I find...Jeff

Let it cool and maybe she'll change her mind. Did you make her and offer of what you thought it was worth??
Now, if you can trade off something like your labor then you may be able to streeeetch just a little bit. I've traded $50 worth of labor many times for a $25 item. No money exchanged hands and I got what I wanted.....just a thought....but I'm sure you have alread thought this thing through....I"m just trying to talk you into a Stovebolt smile

Sorry to be joining this so late, but many alohas, Hawai'ian steel! Glad to have some Aloha back on the site -- been awhile since we've heard from HulaDave...

But you might be interested to know that this site was born in Hawai'i -- we went online on aloha.net in November of '95 when I was stationed at Kane'ohe Bay.

Man, we've come a long way since then ...

Mahalo,
Waimanalo Johnnie

Thanks all for the support.Heading out now to look at it.
aloha John, neat story about starting it all here...I love it here but the available old trucks that haven't completely rusted away make for pretty slim pickin's! Who knows...May have to come visit and drive one back.Well, at least as far as Long Beach...Long swim from the LEFT Coast to Big Island!!(Maybe need to find an old Stove Boat!!LOL)

Actually, there are Stovebolts that would work for you

They can be a little pricey when you find one, though

Hey John,I got chickens running around here, maybe I could convince the wife we need a"duck" to keep the chickens company...
BTW,I was in San Francisco in Oct.They have a tour where you can ride one of those in the bay.Wish I had made time to go on it.
I got to see the 67(?) c-10 today.A little rough around the windshield but not too bad for over here. The wife's owner said he was working late so didn't get to talk about the truck.Maybe on Saturday.just got to be patient...this ain't the mainland!

Aloha Hawaiiansteel ! When my orders for Nam were cancelled they shipped me to the "Tourist" island .Stationed at Schofield but worked at Wheeler AFB . Never got used to being able to drive around ones whole world in a couple of hours. Had hoped to visit the big island but never could get there . If you get the '51 I may have a dash for you . It's a wonder that there is just a "little " rust on the '51 with all the salt air around you . Keep us posted and as one who is rarely a patient person when it comes to old trucks - Patients does work . It took over 25 years to get my "TOTO" a '52 GMC 1 1/2 ton from it's owner. Good Luck ! Aloha ,Hope all is well with everyone...
had my hopes up Today about a call I got. This very nice lady called me to say she had what she thought was an old chevy truck from the thirties or forties. When I got there it turned out to be an old "DODGE"!!It is a cool old truck.Wish i hadn't left my camera in my s-10 blazer.I want to go back and get some pictures...Help me!! I'm going crazy!!Sound off!! Should I go for it while I'm looking for an old Chevy or come to my senses and run from it?I'm going to look at an old military truck (they are not sure what make it is.Maybe a Chevy from the forties?) on Wed.It's supposed to be bigger than a pickup but smaller than deuce and a half according to owner.LOL
I haven't had this much fun in quite a while.I think my youngest is starting to think I've lost my mind though...

Don't worry Jeff things will come around . If it's old military it's a good chance it will be a GMC truck . Sorry to say this but I just bought a '48 Chevy 1 1/2 ton w/dump . It was hiding out 4 blocks from my shop and I didn't know it was there. Hope to get it with "TOTO" this weekend cause it needs a fuel pump and coil . If I do I'll post pictures for you to drool over in the Big Bolt forum . Good Luck in the search . ED H

Hey Jeff,

I think that they are all cool, so go ahead, and take some pics of that Dodge. But, I vote that you hold out for a GM.

IMHO, I believe that you will discover, GM truck parts are more plentiful, and the trucks are easier to work on because a lot of the parts are more interchangeable over a wider variety of years than the other makes.

But most important of all, there is no better source for information on old trucks than the Stovebolt Page.

Hang in there, I believe that the right GM truck will come your way.

Be patient

John

PS: If you get any pics of that Dodge, I would appreciate if you would send me a couple so I can ad them to my collection. grin

Yeah Jeff, I think John said it all right there. I'm not very familiar with that wonderful island state you call home, but there's got to be some old stovebolts hiding out someplace. It's hard to be patient but... I feel for ya. Hang in there.
