just made my purchase on a '49 gmc d-lux cab and have not been able to take possession of it yet.(weather!) the one thing i do need first of all is to order me a electric fan kit..w/ all the necessary's(mounting kit, thermostat)just need to get an idea of what the "across" diameter, and the "height" is so i can go ahead and order one.the p.o. said that the original radiator had been gone through and checked and that the shop that had performed the rad. service told him that the rad. had a 5 row......? is this true for these years of trucks? any information is greatly appreciated on this subject.

Doesn't sound like the original radiator to me. I heard of them being 4 core but not a 5. What engine is in the truck?

the engine in it now is a 355ci sb...., and he was adamant that the radiator was a 5 row. he pointed to the center of the radiator and said that the very center of the radiator had 5 rows. i'm gonna need to get him to clarify the radiator issue.as for the width and height .....? the dimensions are still needed... as the core support area and surrounding sheetmetal is all stock.

I am using a 19" fan on my Chevy, and there is plenty of space under there for a bigger one.

When installing a 350 sb the fan sits mighty low, I removed mounting tabs off radiator lowered and moved forward to clear steel blade and made custom fan shroud. I added Vintage a/c condensor and transmission oil cooler, making electric fan mounting tough. See if this link works my first time trying with photo's

thanks for the replies! 19" is a pretty good size diameter to be running...had any problems w/ engine temp.? and did you mount from inside (pulling) or from the outside (pushing)?

I have a 350 sbc in my 54 and we just put a new Walker Z-Cool radiator in ... same problem; the fan was sitting way too low. So we removed the fan and installed a 16" electric fan w/shroud.

Perfecto! And I can't hear the fan at all -- note: we wired the fan through the ignition so it doesn't keep running when I turn the engine off,
