Had to do some MILLING with lathe today and had to dwell on subject for a while. Did find I'd let the cross feed get a bit sloppy. The big mill is down for a new reservoir, pump, and lube lines. Needed a offset distributor drive button for a flat head Ford. The result won't win a ribbon at the crafts fair but it works.

The cross feed nut on my Atlas/Craftsman 12" lathe has developed quite a bit of slack. That's not surprising, since I have a tendency to use the machine for projects far beyond its design capabilities. I just ordered a new replacement from a supplier on Ebay who is making replacement parts for the old machines. As soon as I get that 3 phase generator you practically gave me wired up and running, I've got a Bridgeport mill stashed away that will take over most of the heavy duty milling jobs my home brewed milling attachment has to do now. Nothing beats having the right tool for the job, even if being able to cobble up a suitable substitute comes in handy at times!

Jerry,
Once you get the Bridgeport running make a mount jig for boring wheel/master cylinders to be sleeved. Much quicker and easier than doing on a lathe.

I use a piece of flat plate welded to a pipe to hold the cylinder, and offset the jaws of a 4 jaw chuck to center it. A #2 Morse taper in the tailstock with a piece of round stock the inside diameter of the wheel cylinder or the MC threaded onto it holds it centered and straight while I adjust the chuck. Once the fixture is on center, multiple cylinders can be machined off the same fixture. A tool post grinder on the compound rest does the finish diameter and polishing, or I can rough out the sleeve ID and use my Sunnen hone for that operation.

I just acquired another piece of equipment- - - -a surface grinder that should have enough table travel to mill stovebolt cylinder heads- - - -once I make a holding fixture to mount to the magnetic base. I'm headed to central North Carolina to pick it up this weekend.
