Hello, was wondering if anyone had installed an EPAS electric power steering system on a 56 Chevy 3800? If so how did it work? EPAS needs the OD of the steering column and shaft size and hollow or solid shaft, can anyone help me out with these dimensions and questions? Also is there a cheaper setup that can be installed?
Thanks for your help!

Mike,

First off, WELCOME to the Stovebolt community. wave

As this is your 1st post as a new member, not sure if you are aware you can post pictures of your truck in your posts (up to 10 in each post) to give folks a better idea of what you have going on.

If you need help with posting pictures, click here: Picture posting guide

As always, we invite new members to post in our Welcome Centre and tell us a bit about you and your truck.

As far as your question goes, this would be better asked in The HiPo Shop forum as this type of change is considered a modern modification/upgrade to your '56 1 ton.

You can also search the site for previous conversations/posts about this topic. See "Searching the Site" in the left margin of this page for the gateway to such searches.

Others should be along soon to provide some further guidance and maybe share their experiences. thumbs_up

The reason this post was moved to Driveline from GTT: after doing a site search I determined the majority of discussion about electric power steering has been conducted in the Driveline Forum.

To the OP, use the site search conveniently located in the left margin of every page to find hundreds of discussions on this subject.

To the Driveline Forum Moderator, if you feel the need to move this discussion to the HiPo Forum feel free to do so.

I don't have any experience with the EPAS system except owning a late model vehicle that has one, and reading some about them.
The problem as I see it is that it backs up the stock manual steering box. If the reason that you want PS is because the original box
has excessive play and/or is worn out, this is not going to help much.
If the steering box, king pins, drag link, and tie rods are all in good condition, it should work great.

I have one for my 53 3100 but haven't installed it yet. I put one on my friends 53 about 3 years ago and he loves it. I also plan on putting a 1.5 steering quickener on mine. I also rebuilt my box.
