Growing up in Pennsylvania we used a brace and bit to drill the holes in maple trees to get the sap for making maple syrup. We used one gallon oil cans to collect the sap, we had many old brands, I remember wolf's head.

Evan, this rant is a bit unnecessary for this crowd of old-timers, I am sure will not get any dissenters. When I go out I use a brace to help support my back so as to not walk stooped over.

I thought we were not allowed to use terms like "OLD' or "Old Timers" as they my cause someone's feelings to get knocked off the dresser.

At my age I am "old". There is no other way to describe it. I still have my old brace & bits that I had when I was a kid. I also have an old plane & a crank drill with gears that spin the mandrel. I used it off & on to drill out carb Jets. George
They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

I believe I have an Old Timer pocketknife. Wait, maybe that was a Jack knife... Be really cool if it was traced back to Jack the Knife. John

Tim, I am sure they don't do that way anymore but they used to use a spade to dig graves.

I have an old brace that the chuck takes the triangle shank bit, a selection of Forstner bits, butterfly bits, and even some rifle rifling buttons but none of these are drills and none of my fractional or letter drills are bits.
