curious about the melling cam. It for mechanical or hydraulic lifters?

Both the Melling CCS-1 and the Elgin E-293S are solid lifter cams. The Elgin cam is a virtual clone of the original equipment Corvette/261 cam, with the only difference being a slight change in the lash specification. The Melling cam has a few more degrees of "valve open" duration on the exhaust lobe. Neither one will have an objectionable idle lope, or reduce manifold vacuum or low end torque.

The later 230" engine already has intake ports far larger than possible in a 235 head.

Things that act against more cam duration:
Low static CR
Tall rear axle ratio (low number)
Any auto trans with stock converter
