Hello fellow bolters,

I have a quick question. Does somebody know what kind of engine (216 or 236) i have. It is for a 1951 Chevrolet 1300 (3100 for the americans). I tried looking it up but can't find anything. I'm not really familiar with identifing engines so i hope somebody can help!

The Identification numbers are:
C432227 (engine code next to the oil dip stick)
3695408 (on the engine block near the oil pan)
3695451 (Next to the vavle cover)

With kind regards,

Thijs

My semi-educated guess is that it is a 216. A similar question came up a few months ago and someone posted a chart. Hopefully that person will see your post and comment.

There is some Canadian GM truck information here. [hotrod.gregwapling.com]

I do not know if your question is answered by the info at that link.

There is a little Canadian Chevrolet Truck info at this page on my website. [1954advance-design.com]

Try a Internet S E A R C H on these words: Advance-Design Canadian Chevrolet trucks

Thijs, I hope you got the information you needed.

I read somewhere previously that Canada GM did many things differently than US GM, including the short side (push rod) cover 216 which was never built in the US. Please post some pictures of your engine and truck.

I have a Canadian 216 with a short side cover. Although now rebuilding a '55 235 to replace it. Picture of the 216 attached (I think. Can't see it in the preview).

I'm just trying to follow the logic.

'38-'52~ 216 US GM side of head is open to the lifter galley and has a tall galley cover,
'50-'53 235 US GM (previously military only) has the short cover.
'50?-'52 216 Canada GM also has the short cover.

Manufacturing head and block forms for a foundry are $$$ or CA$$$.
Could the early '50-'53 un-tooled blocks be bored out to 216 and 235?

The head on the Canadian 216 with the short side cover reminds me of the head on the US 50-52 235. I wonder if they are the same.

I remember reading somewhere that they used a 235 head on a 216 in Canada, buy I'm at a loss as to where I saw it. I had a 1948/9? parts truck that had the high side cover on the 216. I thought mine was a 235 because of the head and the research I did, but when I pulled the head off, it had the bore of a 216. Head casting number is 3695451, can't currently read the date code (painted over). I've researched (read) that the 3695451 code is equivalent to the 3835499.

head casting 3835499 is used in multiple part numbers and maybe machined differently - swap with caution
head casting 3835499 is used in part # 3835545 for a 235 engine 50-53 in USA, these are likely babbitt 235s
head casting 3835499 is used in part # xxxxxxx also found on Canadian 216 51 engines (block 3695408)
head casting 3835499 is used in part # 3703569 for a USA 54 261 engine
