Picked up a project truck that I probably should have passed up. Always like the look of them…was an impulse buy that hasn’t sat well with the boss. I now own a 1955 3100 half ton stepside that has been sitting idle for 25 years. It now sits along side 1933 & 1934 Fords that I’m restoring.
I have decoded the numbers. It has a hopped up 327, a 3-speed and late 60s rear end. Been converted to disc brakes up front too but not sure what they came from. My understanding is that this makeover was done many, many years ago. My objective is to pull and sell the 327 and put a 6-cyl back in it.
Been reading up on the Stovebolt and thinking about a mid-sixties 6-cylinder if it bolts right up. Perhaps a bit more reliable, a few more horses and smoother running than the original’55 engine. But who knows where this will end up. I’m rebuilding the Holley 600, while MMO soaks the cylinders, so that I fire it up.
I look forward to learning what I don’t know.

Welcome to the Stovebolt madness. There is no cure!  BTW, the V8 was an option in 1955.

If it has a V8 then any of the 63 or newer I6 engines will bolt up to the existing bell housing. You will be trading down for less horsepower and torque with the six and for way poorer fuel mileage if you choose a 292.

Struggling to locate an I6 in the New England area.
In the meantime, been doing a lot of reading but still confused on motor mount locations for the various years. Do early sixties blocks, as coilover mentioned above, use/have same motor mount location on forward sides of the block? I’m not interested in fabricating mounts, just want a drop-in bolt in for this ‘55 second series.
