I'm putting a 1962 chevy 235 in my 53 half ton. The flywheel that was on the motor when I got it, was bolted on using external star type lockwashers on the bolts. I'm thinking that the flywheels I've worked with before, (probably 216), had brackets under the bolts that had bend over tabs to lock the bolts. So, I'm not sure which to use. Please advise

Most engines that used locking tabs probably broke long ago and were replaced with the star type lock washers. The newer engines I have worked on all had the star washers. Either one would work fine, just torque the bolts to specifications. Fred

You'd be better off to use internal tooth star washers, not external. The flywheel bolt holes go all the way through the hub, bypassing the rear oil seal, and an external star washers will allow a little oil to seep past them and into the clutch housing. Personally, I'd use thin Grade 8 SAE flat washers, and blue LocTite. The LocTite will form a really good oil seal and prevent leaks better than either type of lockwasher. Jerry

x2 on the LocTite or at the minimum some type of thread sealer. Any oil that seeps by these bolts spins in a centrifugal fashion right straight onto the clutch disc.

I bought a 1958 3800 with a 10 foot flat bed, one with a "just rebuilt" 235 engine. The so-called "rebuilder" had cross-threaded one of the flywheel bolts, and just left it out rather than trying to correct his mistake. The clutch got oil soaked in a matter of a few hundred miles, and my driveway had a pretty good puddle from the oil leaking from the bell housing! Jerry
