Hello everyone
I have an oil leak from the tailstock of my 50 gmc 3 speed transmission. I have heard that overfilling the trans could cause this .Any ideas on this and if so can the extra oil be drained. I know that there is a drain plug for the trans but will the oil drain from the tailstock. Any help would be appreciated

That leak is probably from the u-joint ball. There are cork seals that are prone to wear with the movement of the rear suspension and the torque tube. The whole area is typically covered with oil and dust and pretty grimy.

Overfilling the trans is actually pretty hard as the fill plug is the fill level. Fill it till the oil starts running out of the fill plug in the side. There's also a fill plug toward the rear that you could overfill (calls for 1/2 pint) for the u-joint housing. That could be overfilled, but it really wouldn't make much difference in the leak potential of the cork seal around the torque tube ball. You probably need to pull that off and get a reseal kit. Kind of hard to do with a complete truck as yo have to maneuver the torque tube up and down to get the ball housing off of it. There's a procedure in the shop manual to do that.
