My canister filter (a Fram) has a little drain plug near the bottom. I’ve never used it, rather using a Turkey baster to suck the thing empty.

Got to thinking, could I use a radiator-style petcock in place of that little plug? Can those be trusted with oil? I’d spend the $5 on a petcock to reduce the mess. Not going to spend the $30 or so on a Fumoto style valve.

I wouldn't bet my engine's life on a radiator petcock, but a 1/8" pipe stainless steel or brass ball valve would probably work. There's lots of them on Ebay for a bunch less than 30 bucks, though! Take the handle off to keep it from getting moved accidentally and either store it in the tool box or use a Crescent wrench to turn the valve.

Edit: I just found several there for under $10.00 and one for $6.95. The ones with a male pipe thread will screw right into the filter housing without a nipple

Yep, that would work. It's got a pressure rating far above stovebolt oil pressure, and since most canister drain plugs are 1/8" NPT it should thread right in.

I have a small brass ball valve on both of mine.

Stir up a little solvent like Diesel fuel or Mineral Spirits in the canister before opening the drain valve and you can wash the inside before you drain it. The output orfice in the standpipe is way up the tube so there's no danger of contaminating the crankcase.

How big is the hole through the little petcock? Those oil filters are prone to being sludge pots. I am wondering if it will flow.

I put barb fittings on the ball valves and run a length of fuel line from the fitting down to the oil drain pan during oil changes so the filter housing drains while the pan drains.

That’s what I had in mind. I make a terrible mess every time I open the canister. Did it again today.
