heater install / firewall pad

question pertains to 53 half ton. I'm installing the interior firewall pad. Mine has the flexible rubber-like coating on it. My heater is a fresh air heater, which has 2 studs that mount to the firewall. I'm hoping that I can just cut a small rectangular hole in the pad, for the stud bracket to go in against the firewall. Will this work, or do I need to cut out a much larger area in the pad, for other areas of the heater?

I not sure about your particular heater but mine was installed over the insulation pad. The only holes cut in the pad were for the two heater core tubes and 3 mounting bolts.
