Why were front hubs staked to brake drums?

I am getting ready to replace the front hubs on my 53 3100 and was wondering why the front hubs were staked to the brake drums, from what I read when you replace the hubs you don't have to re stake them? or is this not true.

Thanks

I've seen this asked and answered several times and the consensus seems to be to hold them together during assembly. Installing them as a unit makes half as many parts to handle... time saver.

I had that set up on a 50 3100 half ton. Someone had separated the front hubs and every so often the front lugs would snap off in a curve. I would keep a box of spares under the seat.

Did you replace the missing rivets? I would be more afraid of doing that job incorrectly than snapping a lug stud on a turn.

6571 Something doesn't ring true there. You shouldn't have your lugs snapping -off like that, however had a 1-ton that done that changed it to 5/8 lug bolts. Then went to tubeless wheels, fixed it !!

So should the hubs be riveted to the front drums or are they OK without rivets? I have the CCP hubs.

No need to use rivets in my opinion. I have the CPP hubs on 2 of 3100s. I don't think it would be possible/practical to rivet the drums to those aluminum hubs.
