Looking for info about changing the pinion seal 57 1 ton 3 spd heavy duty. Can I remove just the 5 bolts in part# 4 and parts 1,2,3 come off together or do need to remove parts# 1,2,3 and then 4 to get to the seal in part #4 See pic from manual

You must remove the nut then washer then yoke. Then you can take off the 5 bolts and get to your seal. John

Thanks John, yeah I went back looking at manual and finally figured it out. Is there an easy way or special socket to use to get that big not off.

I believe its a 1-5/8 socket and you can use a pipe wrench on yoke wedge on ground to hold it. Its going to take a lot of grunt to break the nut loose. Possibly need a long persuader on ratchet

You "may" need to take the socket to a grinder and thin the walls a bit to get it to fit. Then with the full weight of the truck on the rear tires, use a 3/4" breaker and 3' cheater pipe. Or a Good impact. If working on a lift I use a crude wrench I made years ago to slip over the yoke that locks up on the frame or spring. Good info here.

You'd have to block the tires somehow unless you use a wrench that holds the yoke. If the yoke is free to turn, the truck will just move. It could even roll over chocks if you're reefing on the wrench hard enough. A piece of bar stock with a couple holes drilled to match bolts going into the yoke where the u-joints connect should do the trick. I have one that has a hole in the center for the socket and 4 holes to bolt to the yoke.

I have a 4’ pipe wrench I use for that, works great.

'47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle.
'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.

Job is done per your recommendations, but only after I hired a mechanic to do the job. He used RTV sealant between #4 part and diff carrier which leaked and he need to two pinion seals because he refused to remove the entire original seal before trying to cram the new seal in place. So I paid him 193 bucks and still had to take it apart this afternoon and fix it myself. I was going to let him fix it when he gets back from vacation as he left town the next morning after getting my cash.But once bitten twice shy and the more I thought about the more I remembered if you want a job done we’ll do it yourself. 309 bucks and three hour of my labor and I did it it’s completed and not leaking and I got a new socket tool set from HF yea me!
