There are exceptions though. Antique two cylinder John Deere tractors. Air cooled VW flat four engines turned clockwise when used in cars but when converted to airplane use turned counterclockwise and needed a left hand prop.

This was not because the engine’s rotation was reversed, but because the bell housing was used as the engine mount and the prop was attached to the opposite side of the engine.

I posted this manly wanting to know if any one knows of a Antique two cylinder John Deere tractor that turns over to the left ?

An engine can turn either way, as long as the camshaft and a few other things such as the offset of the piston wrist pins are also altered. On a lot of high-end twin engine boats, one engine turns CW and the other turns CCW, to compensate for "torque steer" by rotating the propellers different directions. Dune buggy builders who used Corvair engines with VW transmissions had to swap the transaxle ring gear over to the other side of the case to keep from having 4 speeds in Reverse and one (very slow) forward gear.

Some of the old Mercury outboard motors started up backwards for reverse.

I saw an old timer start his dozer in reverse many years ago. The engine ran backwards all day.

Ditto for Detroit Diesels- - - -just reverse the rotation of the blower rotors and the oil pump, and re-time the camshaft!

Same with some airplanes. But not to be confused with contra-rotating propellers.

I believe that the original Ski-do snowmobile was put into reverse by changing the rotational direction of the engine. Not sure how this was facilitated mechanically.

The tractor pullers all wanted the Allison from one side of a P38 to make for an easier install. Jerry probably knows which side.

At work our Rolls Royce turbines were described as rotating anti clockwise as viewed up the tail pipe.
