Hello, I’m in the process of a partial restoration of my 59 Chevrolet 3800 Apache Wrecker. Where can I find information on the correct colors and plating when restoring the Front suspension, Brake Drums,Brake Springs, Backing plates, all hardware, Steering components such as draglink, tie Rod and tie Rod ends and all hardware? Thanks in advance for any information. It is greatly appreciated!

This is the place. Read the posts regarding the items of interest. Pick up an assembly manual, shop manual and any other related publications. Other helpful sources are online or print catalogues from parts suppliers, Classic Parts, Truck Shop, Brothers, LMC. and others. Go to car shows or cruise nights and ask questions of owners of similar vehicles for sources for repairs, parts, or services.

While not specific to your truck, I found this restoration color chart for Chevy cars very helpful. I would guess that many of the truck components had the same finish as what was on the car of the same year.

For the most part all of your suspension parts would be painted semi gloss black with natural/tined/zinc plated nuts, bolts, washers and cotter pins. Unlike a farm tractor that is assembled and then painted, GM vehicles were painted and then assembled...the one major exception would be the engine, they were assembled and then painted, but that took place in a different building and was than transferred to the main assembly line where it got married to it's chassis.

You pretty much can't go wrong no matter how you do it as commercial vehicles could have been custom painted at the factory. Coca-Cola for one had there fleet car and truck chassis painted red in the mid 30's...the chassis was assembled (less engine and transmission) and then painted Coke Red!

Thank you all for the information. I’ll go with black on most of the bigger parts and detail the hardware such as bolts, nuts, fasteners with cast blast paint or alumablast paint to give it some detail. Nothing too tacky though! Thanks again!
