54 Chevy 1 Ton Panel Truck (3805) Front End (Steering) Swap

Holy woah!!!! My front end and steering is in really bad shape on my 1954 Chevy 1 Ton (3805) Panel Truck. I just got through pulling the front end off the frame so that I could attempt to repair it. After heavy scrutiny, I am afraid it is beyond repair. The panel truck was obviously in a field for a while and the front end parts are corroded to **** (feel free to use a word of your choice here). Please, somebody, tell me that there is a possibility of swapping out a later front end with this one - say out of an 80's C30 or C3500. Something.

Some very important information: I am retrofitting, with a lot of fun I might add, a 454 ci engine with a 4T80 (or equivalent) transmission. The 454 is highly upgraded from stock - pushing for a sizable amount of torque. This is not a street rod; just a 1 TON that I want to ues for towing some heavy equipment if need be. I am modifying the frame to support the extra torque.

Back to the real problem: I really need to swap the old beaten up and rotten front end with something newer. To make it a little more challenging, I have to absolutely keep the 8x6.5 lug orientation. All the classic car parts companies only carry swaps for 5 or 6 lug front ends.

Some other notes, I am incorporating power steering. If you have a front end suggestion that requires power steering, then we are good.

Something I wonder about... newer 1 tons seem to be wider than the older 1 tons. I wonder if getting a newer front end and keeping the width would be advantageous. Otherwise, if I need to narrow the steering, how is that accomplished?

In conclusion, I am pretty open to anything. I need to figure something out, or I am dead in the water. Your help is incredibly important.

Thank you.

JT

JT,

There are P-30 front solid axles that will work for you. If you want to stay on 8 on 6.6” bolt pattern. If you can switch to 10 on 7.25” (front and rear) then you can use that pattern too, front and rear. Read Grigg’s story’s about axle widths and wheels. You can get P-30 or P-3500HD axles that you can use the spindles from to fit early front axles(2 ton) to have all four wheels disc brakes. See my other post. There is a somewhat new on the market power steering box that bolts into the existing location with 3 bolts, new pitman arm, existing drag link. Also stories on here about firewall mounted hydro boost brake master on firewall.

Hang out here for a while, most everything will be addressed.

It is best when on here to only post on one location, posting on several locations just leads to confusion. We see all.

JT, look at the top of each page under locked(picture of lock closed) topics, usually several at the top of each category.

Also check our Tech Tips section (see the menu bar at the top of every page). Much of this is addressed there, too.

John, I am not seeing anything regarding front ends for 1 ton trucks on the Tech Tips. A little more help would be appreciated. Thank you.
