Replaced a leaking right rear axle seal. What brand/weight gear lube should I use for a stock 1939 Chevy JD Stake Bed 3/4 ton?

Before you go out and buy S.A.E. 90w oil, you must find out if you rear contains hypoid gears. I have a ‘52 3100 and I use 90 weight multi-purpose gear lubricant not the 90 weight mineral oil that I use in my tranny. There is a caution in my shop manual that states “CAUTION: Straight mineral oil must not be used in Hypoid rear axles or two speed axles.”

I would suspect your’s is the same, but we need on of our “experts” to chime in.

- If you have to stomp on your foot-pedal starter, either you, or your starter, or your engine, has a problem.
- The 216 and early 235 engines are not "splash oilers" - this is a splash oiler. [chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com]

On a "hypoid" axle, the pinion gear will intersect the ring gear below its centerline. If the driveshaft is below the center of the axle tubes, it's a hypoid axle.
