What's the compression on all the cylinders? How many miles since the rebuild? Run a cylinder leakdown test to check for broken piston rings- - - -not uncommon if somebody gets a little careless during the assembly process. Jerry

Guiltplayer, Totally agree on a compression check. If that's not easy for you at the moment, pull the plugs and see which ones (or one) are oiled. Won't fix anything but you'll know if it's one cylinder.
What kind of break-in procedure did you use on your first drives. I like to get in high gear pretty quick, then accelerate (wot) to 40 mph, let off, slow down to say 30, then wot to 50, coast down to 30 then wot to 60. Actual speeds used in this seating the rings process depends on the vehicle and roads. Safety first. You don't want to start accelerating at too low a speed and lug the engine, causing labor knock.

Unless it's smoking bad enough to fog for mosquitoes, don't do anything but keep an eye on the oil level for at least 500 miles. Don't pamper the engine- - - -drive it at a wide variety of speed and load conditions. If it fouls out spark plugs or consumes a huge amount of oil, chances are you'll need to open it up and see what kind of mistakes were made during the assembly process. I got called in to consult on a fresh rebuild that refused to quit using oil several years ago, and when we were finally forced to do a teardown, I found that the engine assembler had forgotten to put the oil rings on one piston. The guy had a habit of catching a bad case of Budweiser Fever fairly frequently! Jerry

Hey thanks!! The engine was on a dino tester and the breakin period was gentle. I`ll check the plugs and oil level as time goes by. Thanks Ron and Jerry!!!!!
You may not have gotten the rings seated. Its time to build a little heat in that motor and run the rings in a bit. Do that and see where you are at. Dont use any additives for worn rings, no snake oil, just drive the motor and get a load on it.
I remember finishing up the assembly of a 327 round track engine just over an hour before time trials started at the local quarter mile dirt track. The "break-in" of that engine was done by a pit crew member who sat in the car and held the throttle at 2500 RPM while we trailered the car 10 miles to the track. My driver backed the car off the trailer, hit the track and ran four laps at full throttle. It didn't smoke! We won two races that night. I'd suggest finding a different engine builder next time!
