Unhook the battery first if you're concerned about wiring.

Hello,a quick update as I waited for bad weather to get back to the truck. I took the time to take the speedometer out and the needle was pressing hard on the glass. I think that s what was making it stick. The sun has changed the shape of the needle and many craks were visible. I just went ahead and ordered a new one.

I will use your directions to clean and lightly oil the parts. Any suggestions, while I am at it, in the best way to restore the odometer numbers? They are all almost wiped out by the sun/time.

Here s a quick picture. The needle came appart as soon as I opened the glass cover... The back of the needle broke when I touched it.

Please look for a recent post by me in the "interiors" section. You'll see a couple of templates for those numbers and a brief comment about making/using waterslide decals plus you'll see a speedometer in which I rescued a broken central shaft. Hope it is helpful.

Wherr did you find the replacement needle? Does the chrome disk below the needle come off the shaft easy?

I burnt the wire that goes to the ammeter today, so I m in for quite some work!

I can't recall where I bought that replacement needle...think it was from The Filling Station and think it was about $10 or so. The chrome disk and needle come as a unit and you remove the old one from the hub and put the new one on and fold 3 or 4 small tabs over to hold it.

Thanks for all the help/feedback. I received the replacement today but the color is white, while the original is beige. Do you have any tips as to how to get the original color?

You could repaint the needle or you could re-do the face plate to restore the white numerals & markers. All the colors have changed with time. Yes...please look for a recent post in this same section about restoring the odometer numerals. They'll be white, though. White/black or I also posted an image for black background/white numerals.

Hi, I was wondering if there was a way to "clean" or "refurbish" the old gauges without having to put decals? For the odometer, I have no choice but to go the decal route, but what about the rest? Can it be done? With what chemicals?
