Has anyone used dish soap, water and motor oil to make homemade cutting oil? If so, how did it work?

Never tried that, but just about any type of oil is better than nothing. In a pinch, I've used motor oil, WD 40, penetrating oil etc.
For the real tough materials like stainless, tool steels etc, nothing works better than Moly-Dee. Very pricey, but a little bit will go a long way.

The machining lube that came with our lathe, cold saw and mill, is a water based, non-foaming soap style that seems to work ok. Doesn't smoke and cools the work. It reminds me of a tire soap. Doesn't rust up the machinery, too.

I ditto what John L. Says. Don’t see how water and oil would mix. The soap would foam up. Just use the oil you have on hand and the thinner the better. WD-40 works great on aluminum though.

Thanks! I have a couple of busted bolts to remove at work (one is my fault, the other two are not ). Jerry made me a couple of nifty dies to make exact center holes in the bolt parts still in the hole and I am just wanting to make sure I get it right on the first try as I do not think I will be getting a second attempt on any of them. I have my nifty Snap-On bolt removal kit (with left hand carbide bits) standing by. The backhoe is in the shop and the skid steer will be soon.

I've used a mixture of unsalted lard and 30 weight motor oil for a long time. Just use enough oil to thin out the lard so you can apply it with a small stiff-bristle brush like plumbers use for applying soldering flux. When the going gets tough and the chips get a little hot, things start smelling like bacon frying. Another popular formula for lard-based cutting lube uses kerosene as a thinner instead of motor oil. Not trying to be cute, but I have always used cutting oil for cutting oil. Do you have better results with the motor oil recipes? I do use lubricating oils for thread forming taps.

One of the best thread cutting lubes I've used was Carbon Tetrachloride (AKA fire extinguisher fluid) back in the days of brass-canister hand-pumped extinguishers. Since the snowflakes with lace on their drawers discovered that everything including breathing "causes cancer" it's impossible to find cutting lubes of any kind with any carbon tet in them. It's hard to beat plain old sulfur-based cutting fluid, but since it's so effective there's no telling how long it will be before it's banned, too! Jerry

Same snowflakes that want EV vehicle batteries, no matter the pollution used to make them and the waste batteries to just go away when they are done with them?

Yep, if you feel like you might not win in an argument, start calling the other side silly names? . . . Since the snowflakes with lace on their drawers discovered that . . . Same snowflakes that want EV vehicle batteries, no matter the . . . Too bad we can't read/discuss scientific, engineering, economic and historical facts without resorting to name-calling?
