This has come up a few times, so I thought I'd post it here as a reference. The Forum is setup to automatically assign you a title based on how many posts you've made. Here's the criteria:

Title Minimum Posts

Moderated 0
New Guy 5
Wrench Fetcher 25
Shop Shark 75 (We have 1,215)
Master Gabster 5,000 (We have 15)
Extreme Gabster 10,000 (We have 9)
Boltergeist 15,000 (We have 4)

Mixed Up
You probably don’t want to hear my suggestions.
But it would be a good topic around the campfire this weekend.

I had a guy today who emailed me asking why he's a New Guy since he registered in 2005. (He only has 21 posts in that time.) I wonder if we should add a new category between New Guy and Wrench Fetcher? Like Slow Poke or Bystander. Maybe at a minimum of 15 posts.

Seriously, though ... have we (internet forum users in general) outgrown/moved beyond the need for titles? And here, users can reassign themselves custom titles anyway. Or is it only Admins and moderators ...?

And what if the 'New Guy" is a gal? We have a few of those and I don't think it is very welcoming for them to see that.

Lurker isn't a bad idea. It's gender neutral and gets the point across.

Yes, probably want to be gender neutral here. Not because of political correctness - it's just that a female "bolter" would be a "nutter". This would cause all sorts of trouble.

I agree, not a good idea to use those.

How about "Newbie" to replace "New Guy", although "you guys" seems to be gender neutral nowadays. My mom's best friend strenuously objected to that years ago, however.

If the member can remember how to get into their profile they can change their title to whatever they want. There are several members who have done that. I may have just opened a big can of worms. Some folks on here have trouble censoring their thoughts.

OK, truth be told ... I'll probably change New Guy to Newbie in the spirit of gender equality but I'm not very likely to put much more effort into any of this. I thought I would just give you all something to discuss.

Just being brutally honest here ...

Now if some one comes up with something really clever and creative, then you will spark my interest. But so far ... laalaa

Not sure, but Tim may have the answer. Sometimes, if you are on a slower connection, it might take a second or 50 to populate through the server. It's done that to me, too, which is why sometimes you see multiples of the same post. It's nothing we're doing to you actively. Ron? You bet. But not you.

Ron -- we do it to you just because we feel like it. smile You have a long ways to go to get on the naughty list.

One possibility/explanation is that you are “returning” to view the “old” thread - that displays the old posts/thread (from cached memory).

After posting your entry/reply/edit, refresh your screen/page and then view the thread?
