My wife has been complaining about something eating her tomatoes, peppers and cantaloupes. So I went in search of the critter(s) this morning. Found the usual grasshoppers and ants but did not expect what came next. I noticed a brown/black color moving through the cantaloupe vines. Upon closer inspection it turned out to be a snake about 20” long. Second one I’ve seen in two days. The first was about 2’ long. I was mowing yesterday and it got mulched. Now for my quandary, do I dare tell Ms Kathy? She may never touch her garden again.

I encourage snakes. They're good rodent getters. Never heard of a snake being a vegan.

Unless she asks, don't offer up anything about it.
We welcome black snakes around our farm.
They keep the mice and moles in check.

I don't like snakes at all. After 12 rattle snake bites The last two at the same time one was a wet bite which means it bit twice which fully loads the fangs with venom. # 13 was a large cotton mouth. I have wandered around in Florida scrubs and swamps since I was 7. However the last two bites nearly done me in. We do have a number of black snakes and corn snakes under the house and they are welcome. Let her know and next time you see one let her observe, black snakes are good for the garden. It could be you may have mice or a raccoon. Ed

Ed, field rats, skunks and opossums keep the barn cats and my Remington 870 busy.

I don't shoot skunks unless I can get a clean head or neck shot with a rifle.
Hit them with a shotgun and they spray all over before they are done.

The skunks I shoot are wandering around in the daylight like drunks. Rabid. They are then disposed of in the trash burn pit. I never touch them, that’s what the scoop shovel is for. The shovel rests in the fire for a couple of minutes before I put it away.

You the man Martin, do you carry them up wind from you and then go in and give Kathy a big hug?

.....the only snakes I hate are the ones I don't see. I hate sneaky snake surprises....so I make a lot of noise wherever I go!
