Our daughter is about to turn 60 and decided to down size her housing and lot size. Her present house is two story and large (4500sq ft) and the lot is 2 1/4 acres which between them an the #@*^ swimming pool keeps her exhausted and drains her bank account. Yesterday we went to look at her new lot and a house with the same floor plan. The lot is 1/6 acre and the one story house is 2100 sq ft. Now the shocker, at least to me, $440k. Not a burden to her since the bidding on her old house is up to nearly 700k from an original asking price of 615k. Our Plano house is about the same size, all brick, larger patio, real wood cathedral ceilings with exposed beams---you know, not a dump and it cost TWENTY THREE THOUSAND including closing costs in 1971. This is a world I don't recognize. I guess I'll jump into my 22 year old twelve hundred dollar Ranger pickup and take a drive to clear my head.

That's why the wife and I started investing in land years ago.
And when she retires, we will be putting some up for sale.
She even said yesterday, that she would fly to Hawaii, if we went on west to visit Tim and Karen in New Castle, Australia!
She doesn't know, but New Zealand will also be on that list.

Don

Edit: Good morning Tim!

It's all meaningless. Dad bought a half acre building lot in 1955 for $100. Sold it 60 years later (with a teardown bungalow) for $400,000.- then died one year later.

When I first looked at houses where I live now, 1974 they were going for $29,000, 1/2 acre, brick homes 1500 sq ft. we waited 4 years and paid $54,000. Now valued at $140,000. The old saying location, location, location. Even in Indianapolis houses are relatively cheap. My son built a new home first year out of college, a nice 3 bedroom home on 1/4 acre lot. He wishes he had it back now. He thought he needed a larger home when his daughter was born because he does not like clutter. I thought about downsizing after my divorce, I got the house free and clear, but by the time I paid a realtor moving cost and higher taxes in town and the water and sewage rates are much higher, BTW I have a well and a septic. And here I have a 25x26 2 story shop plus a regular 2 car garage. ohwell

A new pickup (pick your brand) costs more than I paid for our place in '69.

I have to look out the patio door to see what's happening in the back yard, walk through to check all the rooms, set the T-stat for the temp I want, turn the burners on by hand and actually be there to cook a meal, check my phone messages by pushing the button down, turn on/off the lights by flipping a switch and all the other home related items that she can do all from her phone. Bet it is harder to hack my set up than hers.
