Put trans in neutral so both levers on the trans are in detent in the middle. Loosen both the jam nuts on the top of the rods. Pull up and down on the shifter in the truck and move it back and forth slightly to find the best position where you feel it go full travel without hitting the “gate” or running into the shift index slot. Then tighten both nuts and see if its any better. Sometimes you gotta really look at it and understand how its moving to get it just right. Also definitely make sure the clutch is disengaging 100% or your never gonna have smooth shifts just worn out trannys. Push the clutch in and pop it into 2nd gear(its synchronized) then leave the clutch in and put it into neutral again for a sec then try 1st or reverse. If it grinds you got clutch issues. When you drop it in 2nd it will stop all rotation and then goin to neutral it shouldn’t spin the input again and let you glide right into any gear. If not look at your clutch adjustments.
Yes it could also be slop in the shift box or linkages but i’ve wrenched on some sloppy ones especially c10’s and I have always got them to shift without jamming up at least while I drove them around.
