I think the factory setting is somewhere around 450-500. Mine is currently set on 500, and works pretty well. Any lower than that, the oil pressure starts to drop off and it starts to sputter.

What year truck and what year/application engine?

Shop Manuals show settings ranges from 400 RPM (1937) to 450/475 RPM (1962).

Sometimes it depends on equipment on the truck/engine and the size of the truck.

Patrick's advice is good.

- If you have to stomp on your foot-pedal starter, either you, or your starter, or your engine, has a problem.
- The 216 and early 235 engines are not "splash oilers" - this is a splash oiler. [chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com]
