How must i turn the key to Start the engine? To the right or to the left?

I'm working on a Chevy Pickup 3600, build 1953 with an 235 cui engine.
Here you can watch my truck:

Hello Wolfgang,

If the car you are working on is a Chevy, normally, you turn the key to the right. Usually the first click is a click to activate the ignition coil, then a momentary click further to the right "starts" the car.

A turn to the left, rather than right, initiates the "Accessory" feature (if the car has one).

Good Luck,

Early Chevrolet three position switches were “on” in the center. Lock to the left, and off to the right.

What are you working on?

Wolfgang, please go to your profile information and put your vehicle specifications in your signature line. By doing that we won’t have to ask you every time what are you working on. Things vary from the 1920s thru the 1970s. Help us help you.🛠

A teacher, but always an apprentice.
Is that right from the top or bottom?

Turn clockwise to turn on.

I assume your '53 is the same as my '48. Like Pre-68 Dave said, key straight up and down is "On." To the left (key turned counterclockwise) is "Off" and locked when the key is removed.

To the right (key turned clockwise) is also "Off" but the switch can be turned back on without the key. This position could be for the farmers who did know who would be driving the truck next.
