Kathryn and I looked at a 26 foot Coachman yesterday. 5785 lbs. Found out our new JL Jeep or my like new show piece 98 Jeep TJ will only pull 2500 lbs. Years ago an ol cabinet maker pulled a 28 foot Airstream with a 54 Chevy long bed from Ontario to Okeechobee. Will my stock 54-3100 pull it? Please answer fast the Coachman will be gone very soon. Thanks Doc.

By the time you get a toothbrush and a few snacks onboard that rig will top 6K lbs. That's approaching the weight that would require a tow vehicle like a dual-wheel one ton pickup. Your stovebolt might be able to get it moving, but definitely don't attempt to stop or steer!

'47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle.
'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.

6,000# is nearly double the weight of your 3100 truck.
My 1998 F-150 is only rated for max 5,000# at the bumper, and it's significantly heavier and more powerful than my 3100 Stovebolt. I wouldn't feel comfortable hooking up to 6,000# even with it.

For your safety, and everyone else on the road, get a 3/4 ton truck that was designed to safely pull 6,000#+.

I towed an unknown weight 22 foot Norris bumper pull camper with a 59 Suburban with a 307 V8, a SM-420, and a 3.73:1 Dana type 60 3/4 ton rear end. It was just barely adequate for that load, and it had far more power and weight than your pickup. A few hilly campgrounds in east Tennessee made Granny gear a necessity to maneuver in and out of the campsites, not just an unnecessary extra shifter position!

I just bought a Starcraft 24 footer. It weigh about the same as the Coachmen you're looking at. Most, MODERN, 1/2 tons are more than capable or towing what you're looking at. The 54, not so much. I towed mine home with a 2014 Expedition. My only complaint is going to be the amount of sway I had on the Interstate. I will second getting a WDH with sway control. Take some time to set it up properly too.
