I'm more than sure the subject of grease vs oil in steering box on 55.1 and back 3100's have been discussed before. When I first restored my 3100 44 years ago I was lazy and filled the box with moly grease. I check it often and the steering is right on, also use moly in shift box. I have John Deere corn head grease, wave which is better or another recommendation. Thanks for input when y'all get around to it. Doc.

Do a search for the self-leveling steering box grease. In fact, I think there is a guy selling it by the quart in the swap meet forums.

John Deere corn head grease will work.
I think it is a 0 grade self-levelling grease.

I think that 00 grade self-levelling grease [google.com] is the original specification. (a “thinner” grade of grease)

Patrick, thanks, yes that would be me.

I still have some Chevron Delo EP 00 semi-fluid grease available if anyone is interested (PM please). The 00 grease is essentially the same consistency as the NLA GM steering gear grease, as Tim pointed out, and it's a grade more fluid than the J-D Corn Head grease. The Chevron Delo product is designed for industrial gearboxes, and specifically for those that may have seal leakage issues with gear oil. Mobil, Shell, and others have similar products, but all of them come in a minimum size of a 5 gallon (35 lb) pail, like the Chevron grease. Which is why I have excess beyond my needs that I can provide...

In any event, NLGI 2 chasis grease is not recommended, as it will channel (develop air pockets) and may not flow to the bearings.
