Hallo,
Im working on a 51 gmc pickup projekt. I have found out that it is missing the transmission crossmember. It has the manual 4 speed transmission witch i understand dosent have any crossmember mount on it original. So my question is, is it okej to drive it like this? Or does it weaken the frame to mutch?
Thank you/ Oskar

There are several Prior posts on the trans cross member debate. Some Factory shop manuals make no mention of the trans member for the 1/2t model. While 3/4 t and up a call out the trans cross member. There are many trucks running around without the trans member so that’s the debate.

Mine was “missing” with 4 speed conversion. Missing ( not there) Made no difference in use. I did add a aftermarket cross member as an “exercise”. It also made absolutely no difference.

My 1/2t GMC there was no evidence that the transmission cross member was ever present.

Okej, thank you! There is really no signs of it on mine either, just that the holes for it are there. Found a picture of it in another frame, thats what started my thoughts about it. Il run it as it is then smile

Would it hurt to install one? I've always had one in my '50 and can't imagine not having one.

If i could find one easy i would but as i live in sweden i dont think i will find anyone here. I would have to make a new one, thats why i asked. If i dosent really mater il concentrate on the rest of the work instead smile Mayby make a new when i know that this is the drivetrain that i really want to stick with in the long run
