New thread getting to the points.

1. Can a harmonic balancer be pulled and new one installed without pulling my 261? I assume you remove the radiator first.

2. Has anyone installed Dave's water pump adapter without pulling the engine? I've talked to Dave but would also like to talk to people who's done it.

I'm concerned about room for the balancer puller and room for drilling the 2 holes for the adapter.

Thanks!

You can pull the balance off just fine, the trick is installing it (unless the crank has been drilled & tapped).
You need to remove the flywheel cover & have a helper with a prybar hold the flywheel forward so as you apply force with to the damper you don't hammer the crank thrust bearing to death.

A hardwood wedge driven between the clutch cover and the bellhousing can serve as a "helper" also. Just do something to keep the hammer blows off the front of the thrust bearing. Use the water pump housing as a drill guide to spot-face a couple of dimples in the front of the block to be sure the holes get drilled in the right place.

It’s not that much work to pull the front fender assembly. That will give you plenty of room for both jobs.

I've been known to put the balancer snout end down on the warmer plate of a Mr. Coffee machine for a few hours before driving it on- - - - -makes it drive on a lot easier!

Considering the crankshaft weighs about 70 pounds....Do you think a 5 pound hammer will shock it enough to possibly damage the thrust bearing? Right or wrong many dampers have been hammered on over the years..
Dropping the damper into a large pot of boiling water for 15 minutes also works .....

"Better safe than sorry"- - - - -since it's so simple to wedge the crankshaft forward and eliminate any possibility of damage, why take a chance? Some poker players will draw to an inside straight in spite of 32:1 odds against success. They must be eternally optimistic!
