I know there are many knowledgeable people here. I am looking for a solution to stop water flowing after a set time period.
Yesterday I had a toilet overflow because the flapper hung up on the chain. It ran for 3 hours and filled the septic tank then overflowed into the bathroom. Luckily we got home before any water escaped the bathroom.
I've found automatic flow stops that have sensors that will detect water that has overflowed. What I would like to find is a device that will only let water flow for a set period like 1 minute.
Does anyone know if this is available?
Thanks

Is there a way to incorporate an overflow setup for the septic system for when it gets too high to prevent the water from backing up into the house?

I don't know of anything available commercially, but it would be fairly simple to wire a timer and a solenoid valve that would shut off water flow to the float valve in the toilet after a preset time. A microswitch on the flush handle would start the timer, which could then be set to shut the supply line off after whatever time it's set for. Jerry

The last toilet valve I bought has a feature that stops the water from flowing when something sticks. I have no idea how it works but it does work. I got it at Ace. Edit: I just went and looked. It's the Korky 528.

Further interweb search turns this up: https://www.amazon.com/Water-Block-Excess-Shutoff-Valve/dp/B074V9LL19#customerReviewsIt says adjustable from 1 gallon to 13 gallons. Tiny, the Korky site doesn't show that valve to shut off the water supply line unless the tank is to the fill point. My issue was with an open flapper.

Wayne, rather than putting a band-aid on the problem, why don't you just fix the toilet? It doesn't take much ($ or time) to replace all the innards of the toilet tank and get it working like it should. Or you could get one of the new-fangled pressure assist low flush toilets that use 1.6 gal per flush.
My dad owned a plumbing shop and we made lots of calls to fix the toilets of the "jiggle the handle" crowd. Pretty easy homeowner fix.

My issue was with an open flapper. Exactly it's saved my bacon a few times for that very problem, open flapper. "Designed to fix no/slow refilling, running, and noisy toilets"

I agree. Fix the toilet, new flow master, flapper, done. $30 in parts.
Now as for the septic, I would suggest an alarm system that alerts you well before the tank reaches overflow. It’s a simple float system that can be wired to a light, alarm, or even a system that can email you.

Yep, it's right to replace the innards. Kinda light the battery in my car, when it stutters, I replace it. Usually last about 5 years. The toilet is at least 8 years old. However I'm also thinking about other possibilities for water leaks and wood floors, cabinets, drywall etc.
For what my insurance deductible is, I could put the safety backup in my house. It would also possibly cause a reduction in my homeowners insurance.
The septic overflowed from the toilet not shutting the water off.

It seems to me you need to have your septic tank pumped. Around here they are 500 to 1000 gallons.
