Does it improve driveability in any way?

If stock prob not much but if hopped up with cam, carb, etc will have more grunt, worked in the first Corvettes. I've had a few and love the sound of the duals!!!

What difference does the exhaust setup make if the intake is the major restriction point?

Duals with alternating exhaust pulses make more noise. If you're measuring decibels instead of horsepower or torque, there's a definite improvement.

No proof I've ever seen that duals by themselves will do anything but rid the purchaser of some money. And didn't we already beat this very dead horse for several days beginning on June 1? It will make the truck sound different, but that's all.

I thought Jerry's answer was the best "Get 2 lengths of chain strong enough to tow an 18 wheeler. Connect them with a paper clip. Your cylinder head is the paper clip."

Stock, probably not. As much as I love multi carbs and dual exhaust, even I don’t see any need or worthwhile improvement on a stock motor. Remember those little motors were designed to be rugged, reliable power plants and so all the parts for a stock motor work together pretty well. It’s hard to argue with perfection.

But if you are going to do a few things, bigger valves, Little unshrouding, get rid of the little bump in The exhaust pocket of the combustion chamber, Higher compression, bigger cam, more carb, Then sure, dual exhaust will help a little. Gm thought so too which is why they did it for the 53-55 vette.
