The old school bus near Denali Park that was featured in the "Into The Wild" book and movie has been relocated by an Alaska National Guard helicopter to prevent any more hikers from getting stranded, injured, of killed trying to reach it. I guess the dummies will have to figure out some other way to qualify for a Darwin Award!

The murder victim was drowned in a bathtub full of Rice Krispies and milk.
The coroner blamed the crime on a cereal killer!

I met the parents of the original kid who died there. They live in my city.
The book is better than the movie.

A sad story regardless of the source. Youthful enthusiasm will only take you so far.

Not familiar with that entire story, but did see the news clip tonight of them carrying the thing out by helicopter. Did they say what they are going to do with it?

Rumor has it they dropped it in one of our volcanos, now the dummies will have to check in all the volcanos. Good luck!

By making the world dummy proof we lose everything fun and interesting.

What happened to seesaws & merry-go rounds, or the days of buying dynamite at the hardware store?

All victims of the safety circus.

Sounds like Alaska park service wanted to urinate on some trees.

Nothing happened to seesaws and merry-go-rounds.
Many styles and sizes of each are readily available/buyable/rentable.

Buying dynamite at the hardware store - all you need a license in most states.

Here is the only thing that I can find about The Safety Circus. [safestart.com]

Better safe than sorry?

I must have been alluding to the more accepted term security theater [en.wikipedia.org] which unfortunately applies to safety programs at many large organizations like the park service. Driven by posturing and appearance rather than common sense.

That said... the dynamite license is probably a good thing grin

I'd be surprised if you found said equipment at any public playground though! It would have to be somewhere far away from lawyers.

Spending my grade school days late 1990s/y2k in South Africa we had some sweet playgrounds: One featuring an old steam tractor to play on, another with a gigantic rope swing where you climb 20' up a neighboring tree to grab on!

The guy in the bus story is one of my hot buttons. He was out of control and undisciplined, the combination ended up in his self destruction. He was just a guy who considered himself smarter than everyone else. If you read the book he had a history of doing things way beyond the norm of outdoor adventuring. The only thing he should be considered is a bad example. His actions have resulted in other "SMART" people doing things that result in responsible individuals having to risk their lives in rescuing idiots that tempt Mother Nature and lose. Homer don't give them any ideas.
