If you hate roundabouts, you'll really hate the Diverging Diamond Interchange [youtube.com].
They built one in Anchorage and screwed it up. The off ramps from the highway were supposed to be free turns, but they end at the traffic signal on each end. People really get confused with it. They combined the worst of roundabouts with the worst of traffic signals.

The next town (and county) over from us is obsessed with them! In at least a couple places there are two that are a block apart from each other! I used to be able to plan my route to avoid them, but that's getting harder to do. I'm getting used to them, but I'm certainly no fan of them.

When they started putting them in they said there would probably be more accidents than before--but that they wouldn't be as serious!

I've had people tell me how wonderful they are because England and Europe have them. Well, if I recall correctly, we left Europe and started our own country because we didn't like the way they were doing things over there!

They put in a double roundabout half a mile from my house and I love it. Most of the time the traffic keeps moving, very rarely do I come to a complete stop. It's way better than waiting at a stop light with no cross traffic.

I grew up a couple miles from the District of Columbia line and if you have ever been to DC you would know first hand there are plenty of "circles". I have driven them since I got my license and never thought much about them. Also, spent a lot of time in my youth in New England where "rotaries" (as kids we used to Have fun saying this word with our best attempt at Bastin accent) are also common.
Now living in Howard County MD, it seems they are replacing regular stop sign and traffic light intersections with circles all the time, especially where major road improvements are taking place. They say they are far safer and less expensive to maintain. Typically with a circle (rotary, roundabout) if there is a accident it is more of a sideswipe varity and not a full on t-bone or head on incident.

I just wish they would fix some of the rough pot holed and heaved asphalt roads that I have to commute on.

So the United States was formed from Europeans trying to get away from roundabouts??? Evidently I didn't pay enough attention to history in school.

Not everyone in the US hates roundabouts.

Billy, I was born In Harford County Md. I knew you would be excited about that fact. When I have gone to HQ I have tried to avoid DC by visiting a cousin in Harrisonburg, Va. The last time it did not work and I missed my turnoff and cut over to Hiway 5 across some bridges. No fun. When I went back home it was 4 in the morning and someone gave instructions on a paper plate that worked great. ohwell

Remind me never to try driving the Arc de Triomphe roundabout. I think I'd probably have a coronary. Let alone try to get to the center of the dang thing as a pedestrian. eek Ever heard of the video game Frogger. I think there's a reason they named it that. grin

We've driven a number of roundabouts on our VCCA tours and other travels. Most are in urban areas and understandable. Around here they like to put them on 65-70 MPH highways instead of an interchange. A real PITA.

I have been to Paris and the traffic is terrible even walking in the high tourist season is no fun.
