ATHS 2020 On-Line Convention & Truck Show [aths.org] May 28-30 2020

ENTER YOUR TRUCK in the ATHS VIRTUAL TRUCK SHOW [aths.org]

FREE ENTRY! EASY ACCESS! OPEN TO EVERYONE!

Video Explanations for ATHS Organizers [aths.org]

Show off your beautiful old truck in the American Truck Historical Society's first Virtual Truck Show. What is a virtual truck show? It is your opportunity to keep your social distance while enjoying sharing your truck with the many others doing the same thing, through ATHS – but all on the computer.

Where ever you are in the world, we want YOU to be part of this global event. It's free to enter, and anyone with a love of old trucks can participate. Unlike a live truck show, your truck doesn't need to drive; you can show off a work in progress, a restored truck, or your everyday driver.

Click on this form to tell us about your rig and upload your favorite photographs or video. You can enter up to five different trucks per entry.

This is our inaugural online truck show. Help us make it a highlight of your 2020!

Oh yea. That would NOT be good if anyone gets spammed from this, or any harvesting of info. Please let Tim know. I've sent our local ATHS guy (former ATHS National President) an email letting him know that would be stinky.

When this kind of stuff first started to happen long, long ago, we should use an error in our "registration" ... like a simple typo on the street name. I was flabbergasted how much junk mail (especially snail mail) came in ... and for how long. It was not to hard to block email since Paul had set up a deep spam filter on @stovebolt

Maybe that will help.

It does sound interesting - Necessity is the Mother of Invention.
ضرورت ایجاد کی ماں ہے. (I have time to surf this evening)

I might "attend" this meet.

What other members will "be there" (let us know, please)?

UPDATE FROM the ATHS

Dear Members & Friends,

ATHS has long been the leading organization when it comes to preserving the history of trucks and the trucking industry - even more so during this pandemic. While other groups are canceling their truck shows, ATHS is moving its 2020 National Convention & Truck Show online. Zoom meetings, webinars, and storytelling sessions accompany a virtual vendor expo and truck show.

The 2020 Virtual National Convention & Truck Show, May 28-30, is open to all, not just ATHS members. Plus, the virtual trade show will be live and available to you for the next 12 months. This is a great opportunity for us to show those of you who are not ATHS members what we are all about and invite you to join us.

Your Society membership is worth more today than it has ever been. All over the world, citizens have been asked to stay home and practice social distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19. ATHS is following those guidelines while keeping members informed with this e-newsletter (which we are temporarily sending to anyone for whom we have an email address) and the award-winning Wheels of Time magazine.

Many of these new member benefits will become permanent as we move forward. The online convention is here to stay and will be used to compliment the 2021 National Convention & Truck Show in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

Join us at the ATHS Virtual National Convention & Truck Show. Check the schedule of events and register your truck for FREE. It's going to be a great event! We invite you to become a member, if you aren't already, and ride along as we forge a new path to the future.

Warm wishes and kind regards,
Your Friends at ATHS

Dear Members & Friends,

We’ve been fielding lots of calls and emails from members, excited about going virtual but wondering just how this online convention & truck show is going to work. The best place to start is at www.ATHS.org/Convention. [aths.org]

There are several activities, webinars, and meetings that require pre-registration. Go to the Schedule of Events (https://aths.org/convention/schedule) and see what interests you. Click a title to register and receive login/call-in information. Register as soon as possible, as some programs have limited attendance or deadlines. For instance, the companion Paint & Sip activity has limited space with a deadline of May 20th.

Our Virtual Vendor Hall will be available to you for the next 12 months, so be sure to click through and support those companies that support the ATHS mission. We are still accepting vendors to join Hagerty Insurance, Overman Cushion Tire Co., Vander Haag’s, Inc., and others in this great opportunity. Companies large and small are welcome and encouraged to participate. (https://aths.org/convention/exhibitor-sign-up/ [aths.org]).

The truck show itself is going to be simply amazing! More than 1,100 trucks (and counting), representing nearly 125 years of trucking history have been submitted so far. The deadline is midnight tonight. We are splitting the trucks into decades and creating short videos for each. Just sign our "guest book" and spend the rest of the day looking at all that beautiful old iron.

If you have any questions or problems, the staff are on call and at your service. We look forward to bringing you the very best 2020 National Convention & Truck Show possible. So get your mousing hand ready. It’s almost showtime!

Warm wishes and kind regards,
Your Friends at ATHS

Elephant Tales

Originally published in the 2019 issue of Show Time.

Bertha Outside Nugget hotel
In the mid-1970s, two of the most famous showgirls at the Nugget casino in Sparks/Reno, Nev., weighed close to 10,000 pounds combined and had legs as thick as tree trunks. The showgirls, Bertha and Angel, were billed as "The Amazing Elephants."

Bertha had been performing since 1962. Angel was just a calf when she made her debut in 1974, after Bertha's regular partner Tina retired.

When his elephants weren't performing at the casino, often sharing the bill with headliners like Liberace, owner John Ascuaga hauled them to county fairs, schools, and special events all over the West Coast, including halftime performances at Oakland Raiders football games. A 1973 Wilson livestock trailer was modified with custom side doors and reinforced to transport the pachyderms.

Roscoe Wagner's Wilson Trailer Sales in Idaho Falls, Idaho, completed the modifications, which also included a floating top deck so Ascuaga's ranch cattle also could be hauled with the trailer.

After Bertha died in 1999, Angel moved to her new home at the Fort Worth Zoo. The Wilson trailer was sold.

Fast forward to September 2018. Jim Dobbas, a rancher and ATHS member in Sattley, Calif., spied an old trailer out in the desert near Fallon and turned around to look at it. When he learned it was the elephant trailer, Jim told his wife Carol, "That thing can't be scrapped. We have to save it!"

Jim, who saw Bertha at a bridge dedication in Auburn, Calif., in the mid-1960s, took the trailer back to Wagner's in Twin Falls and had it cleaned up and installed new lights. He had a cutout made of Bertha and Angel and turned the trailer into a display filled with photos and memorabilia of the once-famous elephants.

At the show in Reno, there always seemed to be a crowd around the trailer, where the tale of "The Amazing Elephants" continues to enchant.

And the part we've all been looking forward to – the official kick-off to the summer season – the 2020 ATHS National Convention & Truck Show. Just because we're stuck at home doesn't mean we can't have a good time. On May 28, we'll open the links to the virtual silent auction and the 2020 Truck Show.

The ATHS silent auction is happening in conjunction with eBay. We have hundreds of scale model trucks and trailers in the auction, along with artwork, and trucking memorabilia. Proceeds support the ongoing success of American Truck Historical Society, so please be generous in your bidding.

Your ATHS Truck Show continues to be the LARGEST ANTIQUE TRUCK SHOW IN THE WORLD, both ONLINE and IN PERSON! Kick-off your summer with more than 1,400 trucks spanning nearly 125 years of history. The trucks have been broken down by year and packaged into 15-20-minute videos you can binge-watch, or play one-by-one at your leisure. Sign the guest book and enjoy the show. But you will only find it at www.ATHS.org/Convention [aths.org]. So be sure and bookmark the page now!
