Although I believe the El Camino's were built on a station wagon chassis I still consider them a truck. I've seen many hauling motorcycles and other sizeable cargo. Can't do that very easily with a car.

Well in Pa an El Camino, acording to the Dept of Trans, gets registered as a truck. Not really that ive put much thought into it, but that might be for the revenue purpose only.

This subject always brings passionate responses both ways. Here is how I base my belief. If it was built on a car/automobile chassis it is a car no matter how much load it can haul or how it hauls the load. If it was built on a truck chassis it is a truck. Plain and simple and not hard to remember. This argument goes all the way back to the boxes you could get from the dealer to slide into the trunk area on your Coupe. Remove the trunk lid and you had a place to carry stuff. Did it make the Coupe a truck? Nope, just a car with a box. That’s the way I look at it. Right or wrong it’s my opinion and just like the folks that insist they are trucks, I’m entitled to my opinion.

For American made vehicles, a pick up Truck is what Martin said. Has a bed and built on a truck chassis. Outside of America, it can be anything. They build Lorrys, three wheel "trucks" and so forth.
A greenbrier is a Minivan.
El Caminos and Rancheros are cars/station wagons with a bed.
MVD has it's own money making ideas. Non technical.
The Avalanche would be a truck. The Aussie Ute is built on a car chassis.

Lot's of strong opinions on this! Maybe in the original post I should have put, truck, in quotes. There by implying that it may not be what most consider a truck. Oh, wait, it looks like that's what I did. 🙄 Please, carry on with the debate. 🤣

We are NOT posting at you. We DO see you are not calling it a truck. We are simply discussing opinions as to what is a truck. YOU are not being attacked. Calm down. We DO see the quotes. Thanks for posting that rare Sprint. Really nice to see.

Sometimes we get off topic and turn it into a BS session. Suitable for the Greasy Spoon. The Spotting Alert Forum is a sub forum and is close to the Spoon. No harm, no foul. I just wanted to state the obvious. If a vehicle is built on a car chassis, it is not a truck. To support Martin's comment. That's been the common urban definition for a long time. That comment is not aimed at anyone. It's a statement of information from a certain perspective. It has peripheral interest to this post. Truck guys talk about trucks and all that goes with it.

Tim, you are a long time respected member. You have a fantastic website. Great knowledge. If you think it's OK to call it a truck, you have fallen off the wagon and hit our head. Please reconsider caving in on this. I am worried about you, friend. This is a BIG deal. wink

No condescension intended. Light humor of the third kind.

Subaru got around the "truck" designation by putting a couple of rear-facing fiberglass "seats" in the bed of their "Brat" car/uck model.
