Anyone have any experience with the original style 6V batteries available today? Looks like there are only a couple places that sell them. They're expensive, yet I dread the thought of having some stickered up battery or an optima '6-can' visible on an otherwise period correct truck...

Thx,
Derek

i think there is a thread on this topic
Search battery size like “group 1” I think
6v batteries are cheaper than the 12v ones
I pay about $100 CAD for mine, should be able to get them for about $80 USD

Just purchased one from O’Reilly’s back in November. Not a Delco but looks identical to your photo. Autozone and NAPA also carried them. No one had it in stock but since I’m close to the OKC warehouse it was here within 3 hours. Keeping it on a maintainer since the car is not ready yet.🛠

Walmart often has them in stock if you have the big store with the extensive automotive section and attached garage bay where they do minor service and tire stuff.

When I worked on a battery assembly line in the early 1960's, we would build about 2000 Group 1 6V batteries a day. My job was melting lead into molds to make the posts as the batteries moved slowly past my work station on a conveyor. A helper on the other side of the line would use a pair of channel lock pliers to remove the molds, dip them in a bucket of soapy water to cool them a little, and place the molds on the next battery. Talk about boring work! That's when I decided any kind of manufacturing work was not something I'd want to do for a career!

There is a reproduction decal set as shown so you can make it look period, check on eBay for them.

Woodyscustomshop markets a case for the Optima to make it look like a 3 cell group 1 battery. Unfortunately they run $89.+ shipping. Note that I don't have first have knowledge of the quality.

I researched the optima option for my truck
But from the specs posted for the optima 3 cell 6v battery
It’s ever so slightly too long to fit in 47-53 trucks in the factory battery holder
So I never purchased it
Maybe they were too generous with outer dimension in their specifications?
Has anyone fit the optima 3 cell into their truck that can post
Actual dimensions?

Is the 1954 truck’s battery compartment different from 1947-1953 trucks?
The battery hold-down is the same?

The 6v Optima fits nicely/snugly on the diagonal in my 1954 GMC/Chevrolet trucks.

My Optima 6v red top fit fine in my 49 3100 on a diagonal like Tim said.
