I did a happy dance. I hope to do it again.
Engine exhaust manifold bolt was sheered off even with the head with NOTHING sticking out.
I made a 7/8” diameter washer from plate steel and drilled a hole the same size as the bolt hole.
Preheated the bolt in the head with a propane torch. Carefully welded a nub onto the barely exposed bolt. Then welded the washer to the nub with the AMPS turned way up. Got it red hot.
Then welded a 3/4” nut to the washer. Again red hot.
Let it cool. Turned that thing right out. One more to go. Wish me luck.
This is standard procedure but thought I’d share my success story.

That is just entirely too clever. I have to add that to my tool box of knowledge!

The key is to get that seized bolt hot, hot, hot. Then let it cool. I tapped it gently with a hammer before I put a wrench on it.

Good show! It's also much less likely to do irreversible damage to the casting than drilling!

Nice work. I had that problem a long while ago.. after pulling the head off (I couldn't get to the studs with them on) the broken parts were finger loose!!

Another quality post.

I’m now 2 for 2. I think I might run for President.
“Do a Happy Dance” will be my campaign slogan.
