I have 1954 1/2 ton with a t5 transmission. When sitting idle with it out of gear and the clutch out it has started making a slight grinding noise, is that the throwout bearing I am hearing??

I agree, The throw out bearing will grind when the clutch is down if it is bad. You may even feel it thru the clutch pedal.

The pilot bearing will make noise when in neutral and the clutch out, if it is going bad.
Either way, I would Drop the tranny and replace both.

Bad pilot bearing makes its most noise when the clutch pedal is completely depressed and the clutch itself is completely disengaged.

The throw out bearing can also make noise if the clutch is not adjusted properly. If the clutch petal does not have enough free play when the petal is fully released, the bearing will be resting up against the fingers spinning with the flywheel. If there is no pressure on the bearing, it can rattle making noise.

The people that installed the transmission will check it out sometime next month. It is getting to the place that all they work on is automatics. I had it in before and they called the previous owner of the shop in to take a look at it. I delivered parts to them when I worked for Autozone and from time to time take them some gourmet donuts. wink I do this for all the shops that potentially will work on the truck.
