Marketing an old vehicle?

Hey all,

In the near future, I am going to put up my trusty old 1975 International Harvester Scout 2 for sale. The old girl has been with me for 33 years but it is time to thin the herd. How do you all market a vehicle that has some collector desirability, but a small population of buyers? I don't really want to go the eBay route, and craigslist seems to only draw a bunch of tire kickers out of the woodwork. There seem to be a number of other classified ad type sales platforms but I am not sure which ones get the best exposure. It looks like Hemmings and Classicautotrader seem to be quite well developed, but perhaps there are more? I hope you all that are more knowledgeable of these sites can help me out...and provide feedback from sales successes.

Thanks!

Paul

I sold a '62 Biscayne at Mecum Kansas City. It was quick and easy but a tad pricey. If I ever have to sell again I'll start with an ad in Hemmings & see how that goes. Talk to Jerry about having it inspected up front and making the report available to buyers. One thing that puts buyers off is the propensity of sellers to hide defects. A good inspection can allay those concerns.

Maybe here it covers a lot of different sites.Here.. The unfortunate thing is there are sites out there that will skim other ads try to broker for you without an agreement. I have run up against this in my search for a Plymouth. I have emailed a seller and found out later it was either across the US somewhere and not anywhere near where the advertiser listed it.

Thanks for the intel so far. I will surf that autotempest site the next time I have a greater amount of time. It looks similar to the "all of craigslist" site in that it searches many different advertisements. Not a facebooker but will give it a look from a friend with an account. The truck in question is not a mecum quality vehicle, I am thinking of listing it as good driver worthy of restoration, ~7k type price range so I feel a pre-inspection is above and beyond. Of course I will show all of the warts and blemishes as I want the future buyer to be satisfied with their purchase.

My 62 sold for $8,250 so you might be surprised. Check their auction results. They sell quite a few driver quality vehicles.

The one frustration I have had in my search is that too few pictures, especially of the interior. You can better access the condition if you see all aspects of the vehicle. I am hoping to go look at a vehicle soon which is a 17 hr drive. One of the members here is only an hour away from it and I might try and enlist his help. But I still want to see it in person.

Face book Market Place really worked for me and it covered a large area ,,as I sold my 71 Chevy Cheyenne 3 months ago and the guy who bought it lives close to Anchorage Alaska .. he bought it (by photos and my input) and came and took it to Seattle and had it shipped home with him ..

Bring a trailer has gone upscale in my opinion as an auction company. I stay away from those. But as a seller, it could work in your favor.
