1964 327 V8 question

I plan to install a 1964 327 V8 into my 1957 Chevy NAPCO truck. The engine appears to be a1964 truck engine based on the numbers. I’m trying to find out if this engine originally had an alternator or a generator. Any ideas of where to look are appreciated.

I'm pretty sure 63 was the first year for alternators, the ones with a 4-connector external regulator. Those things are a royal pain in the butt to work with. Unless you're building something that's supposed to look factory original, a 10-SI internal regulated alternator from the middle 1970's or newer would be a much better choice, reliability-wise.

Thank you. I’m trying to stay period correct, but it will be a driver and get used as originally intended so I’m okay with upgrades.

I hope that you are planning staying out of the gas pedal. 327s are short stroke engines and rev up real fast. You have 4 u-joints and a transfer case designed to handle a low RPM 125 HP inline six 235.
I am not trying to dissuade you from doing your swap, I just know a guy with a '57 NAPCO who went with a 300 hp 350 crate motor and could not keep the bearings in the transfer case or was blowing out U-joints.
Granted, he could not keep his foot out of the gas.

Hi Carl. Thank you for the warning. I do understand the risks involved with running the 327. There was a guy many years ago in our area who put a 389 in his GMC version of a Cameo that was also a NAPCO conversion. He was known for destroying the spider gears in his rear differentials by doing burnouts. I had a 1958 GMC factory NAPCO Carryall that had a 389 installed after the 336 wore out. I never had any problems other than keeping the fuel tank full. This is a truck version of the 327, 2 bolt mains, focus on low rpm torque etc. I’m 71 years old so I probably won’t get too crazy with the skinny pedal. Again, I do appreciate you advice.

You'd love the short stroke screamer I've got on the drawing board- - - - -a 305 block with a destroked 283 crankshaft- - - -a 2 7/8" stroke crankshaft in a 305 block gives a displacement of 250 cubic inches- - - - -sort of like a bumblebee on steroids!

HRL, I would love to see that built. I have always thought about a built 305 or 307. I had a 305 with a Crane version of the Duntov 30/30 cam, it sounded nasty.
