I bought this motor and was told it was a 235. The motor has no casting numbers on the block, only the two captain bars above the starter. I know the captain bars are from 261 motors The only numbers are by the distributor, But I can't decode it

The LAQ prefix is for a 1953 235 with a powerglide transmission. Check this website:

http://1954advance-design.com/Stovebolt-engine/casting-numbers.html

Captain's bars don't always mean you've got a 261. The only way to know for sure is to remove the cylinder head and measure the bore size. 235's have a 3 9/16" bore. 261's have a 3 3/4" bore. Both engines have the same stroke, 3 15/16".

In case you want/need confirmation on HrL's correct information, here is the GM/Chevrolet info/document showing the LAQ serial-number code-preface.

If you want/need further confirmation, post the head & block casting-codes & block date casting-codes.

The "captain bars" over the starter is on that 235 (car-Powerglide) block (with hydraulic lifters). No truck 235s came with hydraulic lifters.

That's the problem, for some reason this motor does not have a casting number on the engine block?

1935Masterdeluxe,

Are you referring to the Engine Serial Number, or, referring to the head and block casting codes at the locations indicated at the link in my post above?

The block does not have a casting number. Only the serial number by the disturbrator. The head does have a casting number. It's a 848 head

Check way down low on the R.H. side near the fuel pump just above the oil pan.
