What transmission would a 40 1.5 ton have? I know it’s a 4 speed and original. Is it normal for it to grind in every gear? Mine does. I also have a lot of gear Noise sounds like the rear axle whine. What years of axleswill work to convert the old torque tube?

welcome to the Stovebolt. It sounds like you have a great truck there. The 4 speed transmission is not synchronized in that year so except for starting off from a stop, it requires the technique of double clutching.
