I don't hate the people but hate the fact they make me look like an uncoordinated spastic. Wife and I stopped at an Oriental restaurant on our vacation trip and the show offs were picking up single rice grains with chop sticks and rolling noodle strands into perfect balls with a fork and spoon. I have just as much luck with one chop stick as with a pair and my pasta balls look like a fur ball the cat coughed up. That's OK, with a bib and goggles I can eat as fast as them with nothing but a fork.

I would just take a knife and fork, chop it up and then eat with a fork.
I also don't care what other people think about what I eat or the way I eat it.

So, Chop Chop!

In many parts of the far east the proper way to consume rice is for it to be served in a hand sized bowl so it can be lifted to ones mouth while using the chop sticks to rake the rice into ones pie hole, LOL. I never saw the real McCoy's eating rice any other way while I was a guest in their part of the world.

I like to utilize the chop sticks when dining on oriental cuisine and if my rice is deposited on a large plate instead of in a small bowl I break out the fork, other wise it's bowl to the pie hole and full speed ahead, LOL.

We were in Malaysia two years ago for two Chinese tea ceremonies (weddings) in which my youngest and his new Chinese wife were married per Chinese custom with a full formal ceremony hosted by each of the brides families (followed a few weeks later by a Christian wedding in the USA). At each of the wedding dinners, the guests of honor (parents and bride/groom) set at a table in the middle of a big dining room. Our table had a rotating center where the various dishes of the multi course meal was placed and you just rotate the center to serve yourself. Really worked well. And just as Dave said, many used the small bowl and raking/chop stick technique with rice (I've been doing same when possible since spending a week in China Town in San Francisco in the mid '80's).

One thing I noticed on our two weeks in Malaysia was the older dinners all used chop sticks, but it was very common for the younger generations to use forks just as most western people do. My chopstick skills improved greatly and not to aggravate Evan but I can pick up individual rice grains with chopsticks. Just seems like the way to eat when in Asian restaurants.

The fancy round-tipped chopsticks are made to display in some sort of oriental-themed shadow box- - - -you'll lose a lot of weight trying to eat with those things! The ones used for actually eating are flat, and usually made of a single slab of wood about 1/8" thick, split almost all the way to the end. Break them into two pieces and scuff off any splinters before picking up any food. I learned to eat with chopsticks almost 40 years ago, and once I practice a little, the skills return pretty quickly.

Welcome back Jerry!
I'm too old now to care how I look when I eat or how I dress and act.
Don't tread on me and I will not tread on you.

In a greasy spoon (an actual one), at 2 in the morning, hammered drunk, I once ate 2 eggs sunny side up, bacon, sausage and grits using nothing but my face. It took just mere seconds.
The perfect stranger who actually ordered that breakfast seemed impressed, or angry, or shocked. I'm not sure, as I said, I was hammered drunk...
