GMC label their engines with displacement as the start of engine SN, assuming one has a 6, stamped on machined surface aft of starter, on right side, I. e. 228xxxx.

Athab3,

If someone knows a website (or, has a document) that shows/explains Canadian engine codes (serial numbers, especially), maybe they will offer information/interpretation?

Some/many USA GMC engines have a letter prefix before the number/displacement
I do not know for what years; or, if this is for all years that 228/248/302 engines were made.

- If you have to stomp on your foot-pedal starter, either you, or your starter, or your engine, has a problem.
- The 216 and early 235 engine are not "splash oilers" - this is a splash oiler.

Hy Athab3, Please remember to tell us the size of truck you are inquiring about. If you could post the trucks serial number that would help us decipher just what you have. Canadian light GMC trucks were not powered by GMC engines, they were powered by Chevrolet inline sixes and after the 55B or second series a Chevrolet V8 was an option as well. The largest truck that was available from Chevrolet in Canada up to the 55A or first series were powered by GMC engines the 248 in every one I have seen. In the United States the GMC engine serial number began with the engines displacement, example 248----, 270----, 302----, in Canada the GMC engine engine serial number began with two letters usual G and one other letter. The C in Chevrolet engines serial number I always assumed to designate a commercial engine, just my assumption, hope that helps.

hi Athab3,
unfortunately the stamped Canadian engine serial numbers contain almost no information about the engine.
if you want to identify Canadian engines you need to find the block casting and head casting numbers.

C440744 the C mean light Commercial - likely from a 1/2 ton pickup, is your 55 GMC a 1/2 ton?
does this engine number match the vehicle chassis tag?

post the casting numbers and i'll see what i can find
