I need national input on this,Please......
I have a 51 chevy coe on a 1996 chevy H.D chassie. The steering box is on the inside of frame, fasten with 3 bolts. Would there be a problem to remove the top two bolts, loosen the bottom bolt and swing the box up about 3 inches, then re-drill new bolt holes and replace the other 2 bolts? It would move the tie rod end up a few inches but there is enough threades to adjust toe-in.I need a better angle of attack to go thru stock cab.I have heard pros and cons locally but would like to hear some input from some of you.I sure hope I am on the right forum after what I read today.Thanks....

Don't know what angle your trying for, but I put a 48 COE on a 78 frame and used a van steering box. Also have you thought of using a short steering column and having the first u-joint in the cab? This is the way most all of the front wheel drives do it.

Thanks Jack, the short steering column may work as I have to change it anyway.I would like to use the heavy duty steering box if I can.

The frame on mine is 3/4t and the van box is 3/4t(also 78) no difference in size. The reason I used the van box was it has a more upright angle. I'm using a early van column shortened 14 1/2" makes angle much less, joint at the box and end of column

is your c.o.e. finished and is your steering a tilt?I have the u-joints from a potatoe chip truck,but I hadn't thought of shorting the column.Thanks,you have given me some new ideas.

No the truck isn't finished yet. But I did the same thing joint wise with my cpe which I've put over 24,000 mi on. Used a front wheel drive column on that. Yes the column in the truck is tilt.

Jack,did your engine clear your steering in the coe or did you have to move it back.I'm putting a Cummins in mine and it's going to have to go behind the cab,don't have enough room under hood for radiator much less engine.Is your cab setting of stock mounts or did you drop it down.Thanks for the input........J.D.Poole

No problem with steering clearance on mine. It's a 500 Caddy sitting behind the cab. Yes mines dropped down, the floor is about 3" off the frame in the front, the running boards are 6" off the ground. Needed to be able to get it through a 7' garage door and I didn't want to chop it, I feel the body below the windows is the correct ratio (2/3 - 1/3) for the glass area.
