I'm headed on a long haul road trip later this week, a 600-something mile haul to Inverness Florida from middle Tennessee with my Harley on a trailer to participate in a Patriot Guard Riders honor mission for my longtime friend and retired Chief Warrant Officer Mark Millican. Mark passed away late last week at the too-young age of 65 after a long battle with lung cancer. Normally I'd be riding, but a trip that far in a 100-degree heat wave isn't just unwise, it's suicidal! I'm not ready for my own honor ride quite yet! Fortunately, there will be a group of my fellow PGR riders ready to give my friend some company on his last ride. It's the least we can do for a comrade in arms, whether we knew him personally or not!

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you smile

Well, the ride went well. It was a little rainy but I found out a long time ago that I won't melt in the rain! My friend got about a 20-mile escort to the National Cemetery near Inverness Florida, and full military honors when we arrived.

Now- - - -"the rest of the story"- - - - - -Inverness is near Florida's west coast, a little north of Tampa. I've been working as a consultant for a company near Miami for the past 12 years, doing warranty claim inspections. I decided to drive over and actually meet these guys since our only means of communicating all that time has been by telephone or internet! I loaded the bike on the trailer and headed southeast toward the Atlantic coast. Just south of Orlando on the Florida Turnpike at around 70 MPH, I lost my left front wheel and promptly ran over it with the rear wheel- - - - -and the trailer! No, I didn't just lose the "wheel"- - - - -for some reason, both ball joints, the tie rod, and the brake line separated and I'm sliding down the road on the lower control arm! I got to the right shoulder without wrecking, but now the truck the trailer, and the Harley are all in a toing company storage yard in Orlando waiting to get towed to a repair shop on Monday. My bank account is going to need some CPR before I get back to Tennessee! There's no serious body damage to the truck or the bike, but it's going to be an expensive fix. I don't know if I hit something in the road (don't think so) or maybe one of the ball joints just failed suddenly. No warning whatsoever before it happened!

Right now I'm on the east coast in Tamarack Florida, driving a rental car. I'm meeting the whole crew of the company for lunch today and heading back to Orlando on Monday. Life gets a little tedious sometimes!

- If you have to stomp on your foot-pedal starter, either you, or your starter, or your engine, has a problem.
- The 216 and early 235 engine are not "splash oilers" - this is a splash oiler.
