Is there a right way or wrong way to install a new exhaust/intake manifold gasket? Does the shiney side go towards the head or manifold?

buckaroo,

It is my recollection that the shiney side of the gasket is away from the head, towards the manifold. If you have a Shop Manual, I recall that it is described there (I am away from home and not near a manual).

Yes the matalic side goes toward the manifolds.

Don't forget the "alignment sleeves/rings" that go in the registers in the intake ports/heads.
Shiny side out on the gaskets.

What about the gasket between the intake and exhaust manifolds? Which way does the shiny side go?

Is that what those rings are for-to align it? I just ran into that on an International truck. I forgot to put them in the first time- ended up taking the whole thing back off. Of course, it took a whole lot longer the second time! Had a h--- of a time lining up the back bolt because, of course, I couldn't move the manifold around. Would I have gotten in trouble if I had left them out? Rich
