Hello there, before I get to the big problem a bit about myself:

Mid 20s hobbyist/tinkerer/mechanic. I mainly do motorcycles but I like oddball and long forgotten cars. I've got quite a few rebuilds under my belt and know my way around a wrench, welder, and paint gun. That being said, I am no expert and am not afraid to call on some help. This is where my story comes in. I just made a deal on what I was told was a 1957 Chevy 4400. However you can tell by the pictures it is not a 1.5 ton truck. The cab however, I believe is a 4400 cab. I was told it was originally a 235 but a newer 230 now sits in its place. The original M420 is still there. The axle in the rear is 8 LUG and has a 12bolt cover. The front is 6 LUG and im not sure what it is. It runs good and the trans works well. The driver side rear brake is locked up. I go and pick it up Saturday. And help at all identifying what I have going on here would be great, as I will need to start buying parts.

The VIN may help a little. My guess: 4400 Cab, Home made flatbed. Unknown chassis. Emblems blacked out. Fender emblems on backwards. Need to measure wheel base.

Only 8 lug, 12 Bolt I know of is an odd ball AAM dodge? Recheck cover count. Thought it would be a Dana 60. Obviously there are plenty of casting numbers on front and rear diffs. Front could be 1/2T or 3/4T.

Repeat: Just guesses.

Nice looking truck.

welcome to the site! Only thing that seems for sure is that it is a 4400 cab and nose. SM420 is a good strong trans. You may be pulling stuff apart and playing detective to actually figure out what you have. Counting and measuring leaf spring packs and also measuring how wide the front axle is may help narrow that stuff down. Someone may have put a 4400 cab on a 1/2 ton frame and just swapped the rear axle out.

Ran over today and tried to unstick the wheels to no avail. But i managed to grab a few more shots that might help. Also do embedded images not work on this board?

My guess would be a 1/2 ton front axle. 6 lugs ended in 70 for older trucks. The 12 bolt, 8 lug rear, Dana 60, was used in 3/4 ton late 60s to 70s.
Another source of info, especially for the later model trucks is http://67-72chevytrucks.com.
Good luck with your detective work.

Thanks guys. Which section should I post in since I am not sure exactly where I fit in, this Big Bolts? Or would I be better off starting a project thread? Is Mike B a member here I am assuming?

Good luck with your detective work.

When I checked I found that Dana 60 has 10 bolt. Where did I go wrong?

Raider....are you saying that the brakes are locked? This is a common issue with trucks sitting a long time. Unscrew the bleeder. Then it's bang bang, lever, twist, pry and bang and heat and soak and bang and maybe a puller. Sometimes things get broken but parts are available.

Also one thing for sure, you should not continue in the welcome section. Our forums have descriptions for what they are for. See General, driveline, Tons O Fun...........
